Human Resources Announcement

After 17 years of service to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, including the past eight as associate vice chancellor for human resources, Dr. Mary Lucal has been recruited to serve as chief human resources officer and vice president for human resources at George Mason University.

Since arriving on campus from Harvard University in 2006, Mary has made innumerable contributions to the culture and sophistication of UT Knoxville’s human resources environment. She has become a national figure in higher education human resources while remaining an accessible leader and go-to problem solver for her campus constituents.

For me, this is the definition of a bittersweet announcement. In my short time working with her, Mary quickly became and remained a trusted colleague and advisor. Our loss is certainly George Mason’s gain.

Please join me in congratulating Mary on this exciting opportunity and thanking her for serving our campus so admirably. We will formally celebrate her service to UT Knoxville in the near future. Her last day will be December 11.

I have asked Tarah Keeler, executive director of compensation and recruitment and deputy chief human resources officer, to serve as interim associate vice chancellor and chief human resources officer upon Mary’s departure. I appreciate Tarah’s willingness to serve in that capacity while we conduct a national search. Mary and Tarah will meet with me through November to help ensure a smooth transition.

Please join me in congratulating Mary on her new role.

Sincerely,

Allen Bolton
Interim Senior Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration
